a) Graywater includes discharges and drainage from galley dishwasher, shower, laundry, bath, sinks, washbasin drains, showers, and bath, but does not include drains and sinks from medical spaces, toilets, urinals, and hospitals.
b) Some local regulations may require vessels to store gray water in Graywater Tanks within their waters. In case the vessel is equipped with dedicated gray water tanks, these should be used and proper records maintained. Discharge of stored gray water must comply with local regulations.
c) California state requires that gray water be stored on board while in California waters if the ship has sufficient storage capacity. If it does not, it may discharge, and records must be maintained. Vessels calling at ports where such regulation may exist shall confirm it with the local agent well in advance.
d) Every effort should be made to reduce the production and discharge of gray water while the vessel is in port.
e) Graywater shall not be mixed with untreated sewage water.
f) In the event of a prolonged port stay where the vessel may run out of capacity in the sewage holding tank, 'treated sewage' water can be transferred to the gray water holding tank.
g) Where a gray water holding tank is not available or sewage holding tank capacity is insufficient, gray water may be stored in the APK Tank with class-approved transfer arrangements and in consultation with the Tech Manager.
h) When cleaning dishes, food and oil residue must be removed as practicable before rinsing dishes. Oils used in cooking shall not be added to the gray water system.
